An elec. insulating 1000-∦- thick SiO2 film is formed on a soda-lime glass substrate and a transparent conducting film is formed thereon by using a coating soln. The coating soln. is a mixt. of In nitrate in acetylacetone and Sn in acetylacetone and HNO3, the mixt. being dild. with an aceton-contg. org. solvent. The SiO2-coated substrate is coated with the soln. and calcined for 1 hr at 500≦̸C to form a 500-∦- thick film, which made into a patterned electrode. The resulting electrode-bearing glass substrate can be coated with an orientation-controlling SiO2 film and is used in conjunction with another similarly prepd. glass substrate to sandwich a liq. crystal material, thereby forming the display element.
