A process is described for the preparation of polymeric material containing randomly distributed hydroxyl groups. Problems arise when preparing such hydroxyl-containing material from polymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes, especially low molecular weight polymers and copolymers. The described process seeks to overcome these problems and comprises subjecting to imidation the half-ester of the adduct of maleic anhydride to a polymer or copolymer of a 1,3-conjugated diene, such as 1,3-butadiene and/or 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene. The imidation is effected with a primary amine of the formula H2N - A - (OH)n where A is an organic radical containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms and n is an integer of from 1 to 3. The adduct of maleic anhydride to the polymer or copolymer is prepared in conventional manner and subjected to half-esterification with an alcohol, such as a lower aliphatic alcohol. The half-ester is then subjected to imidation by adding the amine to the half-ester at elevated temperature and removing low-boiling products.
|
