1419150 Sulphonation LION FAT & OIL CO 13 Nov 1973 [13 Nov 1972] 52578/73 Heading C2C A continuous process for sulphonating or sulphating an organic material comprises contacting a thin film stream of the organic material with a parallel stream of SO 3 and inert gas while from 2 to 12 volumes of waste gases from the sulphonation reaction per volume of the inert gas/SO 3 mixture are recirculated as cooling gas between the thin film stream of organic material and the stream of SO 3 and inert gas. SO 3 may be added to the waste gases to the extent of 1-20 wt. per cent of the total amount of SO 3 employed to effect the sulphonation. The organic material may be selected from olefins having 6-30 carbon atoms, alkyl benzenes having 8-15 carbon atoms, aliphatic alcohols having 8-24 carbon atoms, alkylene oxide derivatives of aliphatic alcohols having 8-22 carbon atoms, alkylene oxide derivatives of alkyl phenols having 8-15 carbon atoms. |
