To perform uniform cooling for remarkably reducing quench strain, in the titled apparatus for quenching a rod work, by continually coinciding the center of a ring for a quenching liquid provided at the main body of a high- frequency coil with the center of the work by a profiling jig. ! By the operation of a high-frequency generator 1, a work 5 is inserted into the main body 2 of a high-frequency coil and a profiling jig 16, and carried along an axial direction at a preset speed. Accordingly, the outer surface of the work 5 is heated at a preset temp. up to predetermined depth by radiant high-frequency waves from the main body 2 at first and then cooled by a quenching liquid ejected from the nozzle of a ring 3 for the quenching liquid during its descending movement, so that a quench-hardened layer is continuously formed up to the predetermined depth. On this occasion, the center of the ring 3 jointly owns a concentric axid with the center 4 of the work 5, since the ring 3 is attached through ring-shaped universal joints 9, 9 to the main body 2 and the generator 1 and brought into contact with the work 5 through the jig 16 during the movement of the work 5, even if the work has strain, curvature, etc. !
