A method is described by means of which the horizontal component of the earth magnetic field (H) is determined by means of an earth field probe (1). Two output signals (U1, U2), which contain the direction of the field vector (H) in a phase shift, are supplied to a first evaluating circuit (14). In a second evaluating circuit (15), an interference by interfering fields (for example in the area of high-power lines) are detected by comparing several measurements of amount and direction of the vector (H) and the disturbed quantities are corrected or deleted. This method, in conjunction with a position transmitter (16), is suitable for determining the location of vehicles; the location data are indicated on the display device (17). <IMAGE>
