Prepn. of colloidal size particulate prod. (I) comprises first emulsifying a hydrophobic emulsion polymerisable monomer(s) in an aq. colloidal dispersion of discrete particles of inorganic solid (I). A dispersant or surfactant is used to maintain the dispersion in a stable state. Then subjecting the emulsion to polymerisation conditions to give a stable, fluid aq. colloidal dispersion in which every particle of (I) is coated with the resulting hydrophobic polymer. In the prod. the (I) particles are maintained in a discrete spaced apart relationship to each other by the hydrophobic polymer. - The (I) is typically a particulate metal, metal oxide, pigment, filler, etc., and in the prod. the particles do not aggregate. The (I) may be a magnetic material for use in magnetic paints, electrically resistive barriers and mouldable magnetic powders, toners in electrophotographic apples., electroconductive additives for plastics, diagnostic materials for human and animal health applicns. The prods. are useful in chemical processing. |
