A method and a device for preparing the sand of sand areas, in particular of sand boxes, sand troughs or the like on children's play areas, are proposed, which make possible a simple, economical cleaning of the sand, in order, after dirtying, to bring the latter into a hygienic and, from the point of view of functional value, perfect state again. To this end, the sand is heated by means of a hot gas to temperatures which bring about its sterilisation and the combustion of organic substances contained in it. This heating can be effected by guiding a hot-gas distributor (2), which is preferably of rake-like shape and is provided with the hot gas by a hot-gas generator (3), through the sand or by introduction into a sand heater which takes place continuously.
