PURPOSE:To obtain a steel ingot which consists of two phases of solid and liquid confined therein with unsolidified molten steel and has high quantity of retained heat by driving arrays of cooling rivets to a continuous casting body contg. the unsolidified layers in the solidified shell to form intermediate partition walls prior to cutting of said body. CONSTITUTION:Molten steel 1 is charged into a water cooled casting mold 2 of a continuous casting machine and is drawn continuously under the growth of a solidified ingot 4 through a casting mold 2 and a secondary cooling zone 3, whereby a continuous casting body of a thickness D is obtd. Said body is usually cut with a torch 8 in the approximate position where there are no more solidified layers, but in this cutting position, the cating speed is so controlled that the ratio of the thickness/D of the shell 4 attains approximately 1/4. Cooling rivets 10 are driven into the thickness direction of the casting body in the position L1 from the meniscus 7 just before said cutting position under the conditions of the equation (phi: the outside diameter of the cooling rivets (about 1.0-10mm.), phi': the max. diameter of the cooling rivets, lambda: the intervals of the arrays of the rivets in the transverse direction of the casting ingot). The rivet arrays 10 serve as nuclei for generation of local solidification of the molten steel enclosed with the shell 4 and form intermediate partition walls 12 thicker than the width required for cutting; therefore, the center thereof is cut with the torch 8. |
