The invention concerns a method and device for controlling the operation of the dynamo of a motor vehicle which is driven by an internal combustion engine and has a battery and a controller for the current delivery of the dynamo, driven by the internal combustion engine, to the battery. In order to save fuel for the drive of the excited dynamo, the dynamo is only excited when either the voltage of the battery has fallen below a predetermined value or when the speed of the motor vehicle is reduced. Under normal circumstances, the kinetic energy, which is to be reduced, of the motor vehicle is thus used for current generation. For this purpose, a control device is connected to the dynamo, which device is connected on the one hand to a measuring device which monitors the charge of the battery and on the other hand to a switch which can be actuated by the brake pedal. The control device can also be connected to a switch which is actuated in the case of a deceleration of the motor vehicle by reducing the fuel supply as a result of a reverse actuation of the gas pedal.
