<p>The invention relates to the determination and recording of the programme of the path, around a contour (1), of a machine having a carriage (6) which can move in two orthogonal directions X and Y. According to the invention, with the aid of an angle indicator (24) fixed on a sensing head (8), the variation over time in the angular position of the contour (1) is measured, and the analog or digital signals (25) reproducing the variation in angular position are introduced into a calculator (28), as are the signals (33, 34) originating from pulse generators (30, 31) which translate the location of the sensing head (8) into a reference X, Y, the calculator determining from these signals the radius of the circular arcs, the coordinates of the centres of the circular arcs, and the angles of the circle sectors belonging to the contour.
