<p>PURPOSE:To remove collected carbon fine particles by burning, by a method wherein an exhaust gas is passed through a heat resistant filter impregnated with an alkali metal and a copper compound to collect carbon fine particles therein and, when the filter is clogged, water containing a surfactant is injected to the filter to heat said filter. CONSTITUTION:When an exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine 1 is flowed through a filter 6 comprising, for example, a ceramic honeycomb carrier impregnated with a combustion support agent 7 such as hydroxide and oxide of an alkali metal such as Li, Na or Ca or a copper compound such as CuCl or CuCl2, carbon fine particles are collected by the filter 6. When the filter 6 is brought to a predetermined clogged state, this state is detected by a pressure sensor 14 to operate a control apparatus 5 to start a pump 10. By the opration of this pump 10, water containing a surfactant in a water tank 8 is injected from the leading end 13 of an injection pipe 13 to wet carbon fine particles collected by the filter 6. As the result, the combustion support agent 7 generates heat to remove carbon fine particles by burning.</p> |
