The invention relates to a device for throttling liquids, when these are relieved to low pressure in the range of the boiling state, as is the case in cold and heat pump cyclic processes. If there are installations with small liquid circulation flows, screens, nozzles or capillary tubes are preferred, which, however, as a result of throttling vapour arising, demonstrate unstable behaviour or block when the liquid undercooling is not sufficient. The device according to the invention allows a stable relief process in the throttling member by the liquid to be relieved being undercooled by an upstream heat exchanger before the pressure reduction takes place in the throttling member, cooling being carried out with the entire liquid relieved to low pressure, which at the same time partially evaporates. The cooling capacity is not lost to the cyclic process because, as a result of the undercooling, a correspondingly larger evaporation enthalpy is available. The arrangement shown in the diagram is particularly suitable for aggregates of minimum capacity, which have to manage with an inexpensive throttling device. <IMAGE>
