The most important characteristic of the piston pump for operating fluids driven by an internal combustion engine lies in the fact that the power piston of the internal combustion engine is at the same time also the working piston for liquid and gaseous media. Prime mover and machine are accommodated in a common housing. In the case of a multiple-cylinder machine the individual pistons, which serve for the pumping of liquids, especially hydraulic oil, and gases, especially air, are frictionally connected by way of a crankshaft. An optional flywheel bridges the working strokes occurring between the power strokes of the internal combustion engine. Where sufficiently lubricating hydraulic oil is being pumped, a separate lubrication and cooling system is dispensed with.
