To simplify the production of low-twist or twist-free ropes having an outer flat-strand ply, round strands (5), and spacers (6) lying next to one another and keeping round strands at a distance from one another, are laid around a rope core (1). The spacers (6) are made deformable and allow a reshaping of the round strands (5) into flat strands (7), without the uniformity of distribution of the outer strands over the rope circumference being impaired. <IMAGE>
