The direct-positive photographic material contains at least one layer which contains a silver halide emulsion, which has been surface-fogged by chemical means or by exposure, and a cyanine dye. The cyanine dye is a symmetrical trinuclear cyanine dye of the formula 1a, 1b or 1c, in which Z1 and Z<(+)> are as defined in Patent Claim 1 and X<(-)> is a monovalent and Y<(-)> is a divalent anion. <IMAGE>
