Steel strip is formed into a coil by being wound onto an expansible mandrel (2). This mandrel is built up from a number of segments which can be pushed radially outwards by a number of wedges actuated by the axial movement of a central shaft (10). The central shaft is moved axially by a rectangular frame (17) mounted inside a housing (21) connected by levers to a power cylinder (20). The frame (17) is connected to a flanged sleeve (18) which is in turn connected by a transverse bar (22) to the central shaft (10).
