The invention relates to a drive for rolling doors or the like, with a box-shaped flat housing for the gear mechanism. Coupled to the motor shaft is a plug-in coupling passed out of the housing, for the direct connection of a hand crank of an emergency rod mechanism. The hollow drive shaft driven by the motor via a reduction gear mechanism is arranged eccentrically in the housing and extends through the entire housing, allowing the gear mechanism to be attached to the axle of the rolling door at the right or at the left. In this eccentric arrangement of the drive shaft, the control box is arranged on the side opposite the motor, relative to the hollow drive shaft, and parallel to the motor axis, while its cover covers the associated narrow side of the housing. This results in a compact design which also makes it possible to support the shafts of the gear mechanisms at two points in the walls of the housing. <IMAGE>
