A locking device (6) for preventing unauthorised use of a towing hitch socket comprises a member (7) having a spherical part and a wedge-shaped part (8) which together substantially fill the socket which is to be locked. The spherical part has a bore (10) into which a barrel lock (9) is fitted so that the lock can be operated by a key inserted into a keyhole (23) from beneath the device. Operation of the barrel lock causes rotation of a disc (15) which is a running fit in the bore (10). Rotation of the disc causes a slide (20) to move along a transverse bore (21) between an "unlocked" position in which the slide is completely within the bore and a "locked" position in which it protrudes from the member (7) and engages in a recess in the socket. The disc (15) acting between the barrel lock and the slide prevents shearing of the relatively weak operating pin of the barrel lock in the event of force being applied to the slide in an attempt to break open the locking device. <IMAGE> |
