The invention relates to N-arylsulfonyl-N'-pyrimidinyl ureas of the general formula <IMAGE> (I) and to the salts thereof with amines, alkali metal hydroxides or alkaline earth metal hydroxides or with quaternary ammonium bases. These compounds have good pre- and postemergence selective herbicidal and growth regulating properties. In the formula, R18 is hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy, X is an unsubstituted or substituted phenyl radical or an unsubstituted or substituted naphthyl radical, Y is C1-C3alkyl, C1-C3haloalkyl, C1-C3alkoxy, C1-C3haloalkoxy, C1-C3alkylthio, C2-C3alkoxyalkyl, halogen or an unsubstituted amino group and Z is oxygen or sulfur. |
