The invention relates to a process for the decarboxylative oxidation of a benzene monocarboxylic acid, preferably benzoic acid, or a salt, ester, or anhydride of such an acid, in the liquid phase at an elevated temperature by means of a molecular oxygen-containing gas, in which process the tar-like product also formed is separated, and the tar-like product is subjected to a hydrolysis treatment at a temperature of 500-850 K and a pressure of 50-3000 kPa in the presence of a suitable hydrolysis catalyst consisting at least in part of one or more metals from groups IIIB and IVB of the periodic table of elements, including the rare-earth metals and the actinides, preferably at a load of 0.01-20 kg of the tar-like product per kg of metal in the catalyst per hour. |
