In a wheelchair for handicapped persons, having a base assembly provided with rollers and a seat arranged thereon which is vertically adjustable by means of telescopic tubes and is provided with an apparatus for using the lavatory, the seat (5) consists of a fixed edge part (5a) which is open to the front in a U-shape and a central part fitted into the aperture of the edge part which can be swung downwards about a pivot (24) arranged on the front edge. The arrangement is actuated by means of a handle which is mounted in the central part behind the front edge of the seat, the handle, when pulled forward, drawing a bar out of the rear-side mounting of the seat.
