摘要 <p>APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR INTERROGATION OF BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS A device and method for the quantitative measurement of the absorption, refraction, and scatter, as a function of wavelength, of biological materials, especially human tissue, utilizing transmission or reflection of non-ionizing radiation, in particular, visible light havlng a wavelength in the range of 400 to about 700 nanometers, and infrared light having a wavelength in the range of 700 to about 106 nanometers. Measurement of the amount of absorption and scatter is preferably in a scanning mode to produce a shadowgraph image or in a scanning mode using multi-spectral imaging techniques in conjunction with a digital memory or an image storase tube. The apparatus and method also advantageously can be used in conjunction with computer image reconstruction similar to that employed in computerized axial tomography of the type used in X-ray radiation techniques. Such transmussion or reflection is used to demonstrate the refractive index and the absorption and scatter coefficients of human tissue, and is useful in detecting the presence cf an internal structure, the metabolic state of that structure, and the probable chemical and biochemical composition of that structure. In one of its more advantageous aspects, the apparatus and method are used to differentiate between benign and malignant human breast growths.</p>
