Etching liquid for etching silver-containing films or photographic papers, which contains cerium sulphate and sulphuric acid in aqueous solution, and its use. Furthermore, process for etching silver-containing films or photographic papers, in which the said etching liquid is allowed to act for a predetermined period of time, then fixed with a stop solution and lastly washed with water, and apparatus for etching, consisting of a trough portion and a basin portion; the trough portion is divided into several basins, and a device is provided for conveying films and photographic papers through the basins, which lie one behind the other, from an inlet slot to an outlet slot. In addition inflow and outflow devices can be provided.
