A catalyst for removing S and sulphurous cpds. from gases, having increased resistance to sulphate poisoning and increased catalytic activity, comprises an activated Al203/Na20 catalyst having (a) a specific surface area over 100 m2/g (BET) and either (b) an Na20 content over 0.50 wt.% (1100 deg.C calcined basis)and LOI less than 6.0 wt.% (400-1100 deg.C); or (b') an Na20 content over 0.10 wt.% and LOI less than 4.0 wt.%. An activated Al203 catalyst as above, suitable for use in the Clauss process, is prepd. by (i) sizing Al203 to an average particle size 10 micron or less; (ii) rapidly activating by exposing to above 300 deg.C for less than 1 min.; (iii) agglomerating in the presence of water; (iv) aging in the presence of water to rehydrate the Al203; and (v) activating by exposure to over 350 deg.C. S and sulphurous cpds. are removed from gases comprising H2S, SO2, CO2, water vapour and C-S cpds. by contacting the gases with the catalyst at 25-400 deg.C. The catalyst has sufficient activity and resistance to sulphate poisoning to convert C-S cpds. in the presence of sulphate at reasonable temps., is economically prepd. and used in standard Clauss process.
|
