In an electrophoresis apparatus having a vertically arranged electrophoresis cell consisting of two rectangular side plates which are immersed in a lower buffer tank, are laterally sealed by spacing strips and are of different height, the upper buffer tank being sealed by means of a seal in the shape of an upwardly open U on the upper edge of the shorter side plate and on the spacing strips which are extended beyond said side plate, leading guide elements are provided which ensure that said seal makes contact both with the upper edge of the shorter side plate and with the spacing strips without deformation.
