The invention relates to a method for converting heat energy into mechanical energy, in which a fluid is heated within a closed circulation system, in the process is raised to a high pressure, and is allowed to expand, performing work in the process. If the condensation is carried out against cooling water, the choice of the type of fluid is restricted since, for example, it is not possible to use a fluid, the condensation temperature of which is below the given temperature of the cooling water. A similar statement applies to the evaporation of the fluid. In order to make possible the use of a multiplicity of fluids, the invention proposes that the expanded fluid be taken up by a sorbent and that fluid-laden sorbent be regenerated, the supply of further fluid to the sorbent during the regeneration of desorbed fluid being fed under high pressure to the work-performing expansion again.
