<Chemistry id="chema02" num="0002"><Image id="ia02" he="20" wi="20" file="IMGA0002.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>-NHCH<Sub>3</Sub>; R<Sub>1</Sub>SO<Sub>3</Sub>-, where R<Sub>1</Sub> is a straight chain or branched chain alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, or aryl; and R<Sub>2</Sub> is -C(CH<Sub>3</Sub>)<Sub>3</Sub> or -O-C(CH<Sub>3</Sub>)<Sub>3</Sub>. Processes for preparing the compounds are provided. The compounds are useful as intermediates in the preparation of 4-phenyl-1,3-benzodiazepins, which exhibit activity as antidepressants, analgetics and anti-convulsants.
