The energy yield from a reaction between one substance and another is increased by directing electromagnetic radiation on to the substance, the radiation having a frequency of 1 to 100 GHz, equal to or near that of the max. thermal or ionic vibrations of the molecules of the substance, pref. in the band 8800 MHz plus-or-minus 20%. Partic. useful in burning hydrocarbons and analogous reactions, and in internal combustion engines. The process is more efficient than existing processes using radiation to increase agitation and an additive to improve combustion, because it uses frequencies which could not be produced easily until recently, but for which appts. now exists. In internal combustion engines, the energy yield is higher, combustion is more regular and is complete.
|
