A deferred action seawater battery has an anode of Mg, Al and/or Zn and a cathode depolariser comprising cuprous thiocyanate, a conductive material, C, free S and a binder, esp. a mixt. of tetrafluoroethylene and paraffin. The depolariser is pref. on a conductive metal grid. The cathode depolariser mixt. is pref. heated at least once to melt the S, then cooled. The battery has high output voltage and uses commonly available inexpensive depolariser material. Single cell output voltage is e.g. 1.4V for 6 in square cathode in 1.5% salinity electrolyte, compared with 0.9-1.1V for Pb chloride batteries under similar conditions.
