A torque wrench (1) for transmitting a presettable torque or clamping moment to a workpiece capable of being screwed, preferably having an outer square (2) for connection to exchangeable socket wrenches or the like, is proposed, in which according to the invention a shaft (5) provided, on the one hand, with an adjusting element (4) and, on the other hand, with a square (2) is rotatably arranged in bearings (6, 7) in a cylindrical sleeve (3) for transmission of the torque, a friction surface (8) and a second friction surface (9) cooperating with said friction surface (8) and firmly attached to the shaft (5) are provided at at least one end of the sleeve (3), and means for changing the axial distance between the two friction surfaces (8, 9) are in connection with the shaft (5). As a result, the torque to be transmitted is determined by the friction force between the friction surfaces (8, 9 and 13, 14). The setting of the friction force takes place by axial adjustment of the friction surface (8, 9 and 13, 14) relative to one another in a simple manner. For adjustment purposes and for setting the torque, openings (15, 16) which are axially parallel and are arranged on the periphery and into which shearing-off adjustment rods (17) can be inserted are provided in assigned discs (13, 14). The number of adjustment rods, which shear off upon turning the sleeve (3) relative to the shaft (5) as long as the shaft (5) is secured by a handle (22), is a measure, capable of calibration, for the torque to be transmitted. <IMAGE>
