PURPOSE:To prepare 1-hydroxy-2-butanone useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals, etc., economically, in high yield, by the oxidative dehydrogenation of 1,2-butanediol with molecular oxygen using a catalyst containing a platinum- group metal. CONSTITUTION:1,2-Butanediol which is available industrially at a low cost as a by-product of the preparation of 1,4-butanediol by the acetoxylation of butadiene, is subjected to the oxidation dehydrogenation with molecular oxygen in the presence of a platinum-group metal, e.g. Pt, Ru, Pd, Rh, Os, and Ir, especially Pt or Pd, to obtain 1-hydroxy-2-butanone in high yield. The above catalyst is preferably supported by a carrier such as activated charcoal, graphite, alumina, silica, zeolite, calcium carbonate, etc., and it may contain Cu, Ge, Sn, Pb, alkali metal such as Na, or alkaline earth metal such as Mg is addition to the platinum-group metal. |
