A multicellular fabric is produced by direct simultaneous weaving of up to 6 layers of undulating fabric linked by longitudinal interfaces without involving welding, stitching or adhesives. Esp. suitable for making thick section sails, with the tubular passages running parallel to luff or leach; also suitable for acoustic and/or shock absorbent barrier layers. Opt. the interstices are filled by injection of an expandable resin. Opt. the external fabric layers are woven from textile threads having high resistance to UV light, whereas internal layers may be of relatively UV-sensitive heat mechanically stronger material, e.g. polyaramides.
|
