PURPOSE:To obtain a display element having high resolution and excellent drivability and productivity wherein the microfoam produced in a liquid layer is used as picture elements by providing a reflection layer or a light diffusion layer between the liquid layer and a heating element disposed in proximity to said liquid layer. CONSTITUTION:A light reflective or light diffusive optical film 8 of white or light color is provided of a metal or metallic compd. material having a high m. p. between an IR absorbing layer 1 which is colored to a black or other colors and produces locally high temp. parts by absorbing IR beams 5, as a heating element and a liquid layer 2 which generates foam 4 by the heat of the layer 1. A transparent protective layer 3 is provided of glass, plastics, etc. on the layer 2, whereby a display element is obtained. The layer 2 is colorless, or is colored and transparent or turbid. IR beams are irradiated to the layer 1 of such element to generate microfoam like images in the layer 2. Observing light 7 is irradiated from the layer 3 side and the display is viewed with the reflected light by utilizing the light scattering of said foam. The display is made sharper by the film 8. |
