The direct-injection compression-ignition engine has a low compression ratio, injection taking place into an auxiliary chamber (x) in which air is rapidly compressed to a high degree at the end of the compression stroke. This chamber is of cylindrical shape and shallow, coaxial with the cylinder and the main piston, and typically formed in the end of an inverted boss (PL) on the cylinder head, while an auxiliary piston crown coaxial with the main one, works in it. This gives compression ratios of roughly 11:1 and 18:1 respectively in the main and auxiliary chambers. The engine can be started up on liquefied petroleum gas, using a carburettor.
|
