PURPOSE:To obtain a uniform lap margin and to obtain high jointing strength by pressing two stacked strips through a couple of dies and then detecting the position where one stripe bites into the other, and thus controlling the press on the basis of the detected value. CONSTITUTION:Two stacks strips S are positioned between stripper plates 42 and 62. Then, a die 30 and a punch 50 press the strips S to form a cut part 69 in a prescribed hook shape. At the same time, its center part is projected upward and downward to be deformed in a mountain shape. At this time, the lap margin depending upon the engagement between the die 30 and punch 50 is detected precisely by magnetic steel 20. On the basis of the detected value, a selector valve 16 is operated, and while excessive feeding of pressurized oil to a cylinder due to the inertia of a motor 10 and a hydraulic pump 12 is prevented, the feeding of the pressurized oil is stopped.
