The rotary cylinder lock has a cylinder plug (8) which is rotatable in a housing (2). In the blocked state, rotation is prevented, on the one hand, by divided tumbler pins (106) radially displaceable by a key bit and, on the other hand, by sliding pins (12) guided in axial bores of the cylinder plug and cooperating with blocking bodies (20), the sliding pins also being displaceable by corresponding drivers (32) on the key (28). The sliding pins possess, solely on the side facing away from the key channel, blocking bodies or depressions for the entry of blocking bodies. In response to appropriate displacement caused by the key, a respective rolling body (for example, a ball) can penetrate into such a depression, in such a way that the cylinder plug is rotatable in the housing. Instead of the depression, there can also be arranged as blocking bodies, on the sliding pins, blocking noses which, in the event of corresponding displacement, project into an annular groove in the housing, so that a rotation of the cylinder plug is possible. If the sliding pins are not displaced into the release position, for example by a false key, the balls or blocking noses make a rigid connection between the cylinder plug and housing, which prevents the plug from being rotated. Because the blocking bodies and/or the depression are arranged facing away from the key channel, their position cannot be detected through the key channel, thereby considerably improving the security of the lock. As a result of the cooperation of two blocking mechanisms actuable in different directions by a key, it is impossible to manipulate the catch by feel. <IMAGE>
