In an axial displacement and holding device for intermediate rolls (5, 6) of a multi-roll stand, the said intermediate rolls being mounted displaceably in chocks (11, 12) guided in roll housings, a pressure-medium cylinder is operatively connected to the intermediate roll (5 and 6 respectively) via thrust bearings (21, 22). To provide an economical axial displacement and holding device which allows very large axial forces to be exerted on the intermediate rolls (5, 6) and can be released rapidly from the journals (37) of the intermediate roll for the purpose of changing the rolls, a connecting rod (27) connected via an annular clamping means to the journal (37) of the intermediate roll is accommodated rotatably at the other end in a thrust bearing block (18) guided with horizontal displaceability on a housing bracket (13). <IMAGE>
