The invention relates to a device for separating liquids and solids, especially in sewer cleaning and sludge extraction, having a closed elongate vessel, in which a piston sealed against the vessel wall is mounted for moving to and fro, and which has a closing wall with an adjustable flap, so that the vessel is separated into a dirty water compartment and a clear water compartment, the piston having a plurality of mutually spaced screens of graduated fineness on the dirty water side, and the finest screen being located in front of the closing wall. To improve the precipitation of especially fine solids, the finest screen consists of a plurality of filter screen tubes which are arranged with their axes parallel and are connected at their open ends to a perforated disc of the piston. In the preferred embodiment, the perforated disc is rotatably mounted in the piston together with the filter screen tubes, an outlet of a backwashing line bearing against the side, facing away from the filter screen tubes, of the perforated disc, through which line water for backwashing the filter screen tubes is fed during the operation of the device. In addition, the perforated disc can form the end of a cylinder which is rotatably mounted in the piston and which extends up to a point in front of one of the upstream screens, is open there and carries conveyor blades which are arranged in rows in the peripheral direction on the inside and convey solids deposited behind the screens into the region of chutes arranged above the screens, and which drop solids onto the latter, so that the solids are brought in front of the screens.
