A catalyst element should have a high activity per unit weight and unit volume, low pressure drops of the reacting gas in the catalyst layer, high general strength and surface strength, low activity changes over the period of action and low costs. To meet these requirements simultaneously, the catalyst element is characterised by at least one core layer (1, 11) of metal and by at least one holding layer (2, 12) applied to the core layer (1, 11), the holding layer (2, 12) containing, or consisting of, a glass fibre material with catalytically active particles embedded therein. In a process for producing this catalyst element, the glass fibre material for the holding layer (2, 12) is dipped into a dispersion containing catalytically active particles, the excess is then squeezed out and the holding layer (2, 12) thus obtained is fixed to the core layer (1, 11), the holding layer (2, 12) being dried and fired before or after the application to the core layer (1, 11). <IMAGE>
