The subject matter of the invention is an item of seating and lying furniture, also called sofa bed (chair bed) or bed couch and reclining chair, which can be converted from seating furniture into lying furniture and vice versa without removing or adding parts (e.g. armrests). It consists of preferably four plate-shaped partial bodies made of elastic material, which, when placed flatly adjacently, result in a flat lying surface and, when placed upright one after the other, result in a seat profile with armrests. The seat and the armrest profile are produced in each case from two positive-negative spatial surfaces, the boundary end faces of two adjacent plates which are exposed when set upright from the lying position. This positive-negative construction of two adjacent plate end faces characterises this novel sofa bed. A further characteristic is that the abutting edge of the corresponding curved surfaces is straight and thus becomes the axis of the folding movement which transfers the surfaces into one another. Due to the elastic material, these purely geometrical requirements only have to be essentially fulfilled in order to guarantee both a seating surface and a lying surface without gaps.
