PURPOSE:To catalitically oxidize volatile hydrocarbons efficiently at a low temp., by containing styrene in a waste gas. CONSTITUTION:Styrene or a styrene containing gas 2 is added to a waste gas containing volatile hydrocarbon such as benzene or toluene and the styrene mixed waste gas is introduced into a heat exchanger 5 while sucked by a blower 4 to be heat exchanged with an outlet gas stream from a reactor 7. In the next step, the heated waste gas is introduced into the reactor 7 having a platinum catalyst layer while heated to a temp. within a range of 180 deg.C or more-below 250 deg.C by a preheater 6 to be subjected to oxidation treatment. The outlet gas stream from the reactor 7 is sent to the heat exchanger 5 to be utilized in heating the mixed gas to be treated and discharged to the atmosphere as the harmless and odorless gas 8. |
