The invention relates to a method of producing a defined distance between a surface of a piston of a reciprocating-piston machine in the TDC position and a wall opposite this surface of a detachably fastened cylinder head, in which the piston is measured in the installed state in the TDC position with regard to its distance from the wall, and the piston surface is then worked by stock removal if the distance is too small. An apparatus for carrying out the method consists of a clamping device securing the cylinder block, a turning device putting the crankshaft into the position corresponding to a TDC position of the piston, a machine tool machining the piston surface, and a control unit which alternately controls the turning device and the machine tool if need be in accordance with a measuring device.
