A spark ignition internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder receiving a piston and a cylinder head together with a combustion chamber which is connected by way of a flash duct and a scavenging duct to an ignition chamber arranged in the cylinder head. The fresh gas mixture flowing out of the combustion chamber into the ignition chamber washes round the electrodes of a spark plug arranged in the ignition chamber. The piston has a plunger-shaped cap on the surface facing the cylinder head. In order to optimise the scavenging process in the ignition chamber, the scavenging duct is arranged axially parallel to the piston and the plunger-shaped cap has a cross-sectional configuration corresponding at least approximately to the scavenging duct, the piston moving to the top dead centre penetrating the scavenging duct with its plunger-shaped cap.
