The invention relates to a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine with a first control element controlling the cross-section and arranged in an intake line common to all cylinders, and with intake pipes, branching off from the intake line, assigned to the individual cylinders, at the outlet of which pipes into the cylinders inlet valves are arranged. In order to achieve a shut-off facility for individual cylinders or groups of cylinders which is as simple and inexpensive as possible, at least some of the intake pipes, in each case assigned to a cylinder should have, between the control element and the inlet valves, a second control element controlling cross-section and which can be actuated individually or in groups as a function of the load of the internal combustion engine in order to control the filling of the assigned cylinders.
