The invention relates to a method for avoiding abnormal combustions, so-called knocking, in an internal combustion engine 1, 10, preferably an Otto engine. In the method according to the invention, the exhaust gases of the engine are returnable to the inlet system of the engine in a controlled manner, and a sensor 2, 30 is arranged to sense at least one parameter depending on the combustion in the engine, e.g. the pressure and/or temperature conditions prevailing in the engine, and to deliver an output signal corresponding to such parameter value for controlling at least one means regulating the combustion. The invention relates further to an arrangement in an internal combustion engine for working said method. The abnormally high pressure and temperature conditions normally present in an Otto engine during knocking are avoided by the output signal from the sensor 2, 30 being utilised for providing an increase of the exhaust gas amount returned to the inlet system of the engine 1, 10 at the occurrence of knocking. <IMAGE> |
