Coating compositions comprise polyvinyl alcohol, an emulsified polyolefine and an organic or an inorganic acid or a latent acid compound, e.g. ammonium chloride. The preferred polyolefine is polyethylene. Specified acids are phosphoric, chromic, hydrochloric, acetic, chloracetic, oxalic, malonic, succinic and dihydroxybenzoic acids. The compositions may also comprise stabilizers, bactericides and mold inhibitors. The compositions may be applied to glass articles, e.g. jars. Examples describe aqueous compositions comprising hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, polyethylene and (I-III) phosphoric acid, (IV) chromic acid, (V) chloracetic acid, (VI) acetic acid, (VII) acetic and phosphoric acids, and (VIII and IX) ammonium chloride.ALSO:Glass articles are provided with durable, lubricous coatings by applying thereto aqueous compositions comprising polyvinyl alcohol, an emulsified polyolefin and an acid compound and heating the resulting coating to a temperature above 120, preferably 160 DEG F. The coating may be applied to the cold substrate and the coating subsequently heated, or the coating composition may be applied to the heated substrate. The article may be provided with a coating of a metal oxide between the surface and the durable, lubricous coating, preferably by applying to the surface a metal compound at such temperature that the compound decomposes to form a metal oxide coating. The preferred polyolefin is polyethylene. The acid compound may be an inorganic or organic acid or a latent acid compound such as ammonium chloride. Specified acids are phosphoric, chromic, hydrochloric, acetic, chloracetic, oxalic, malonic, succinic and dihydroxybenzoic acid. The compositions may also comprise stabilizers, bactericides and mould inhibitors. Decomposable metal compounds specified are stannous chloride, stannic chloride, titanium tetrachloride and tetraisopropyl titanate, which may be applied to the hot glass as a vapour or aqueous or organic solvent solution or dispersion. In examples glass jars are coated by spraying with aqueous compositions comprising hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, polyethylene and (I-III) phosphoric acid, (IV) chromic acid, (V) chloracetic acid, (VI) acetic acid, (VII) acetic and phosphoric acids, and (VIII and IX) ammonium chloride.
|
