623,011. Filtering yeast suspension. SVENSKA JASTFABRIKS AKTIEBOLAGET, and ROSENQVIST, S. O. March 12, 1946, No. 7684. [Class 46] A method of removing water and other liquids from yeast suspension consists in washing the yeast before filtration with at least 5 litres water per kilogram of moist yeast containing 25 per cent by weight of solids and then subjecting the yeast suspension to a filtering process in a rotating filter, the suspension being introduced into an outer fllter member surrounding a rotary filter through which the liquid is forced by super-atmospheric pressure. In the construction shown, a rotary filter drum 1 is mounted within a casing 21 to which yeast suspension is supplied through a pipe 9, and compressed air or gas through a pipe 8. The suspension is collected on the filter cloth 3 at the bottom of the drum and as the drum rotates the liquid is forced through the cloth by the fluid pressure. The liquid flows through hollow spokes 26 to discharge through the hollow shaft 23. The filter cake is removed by an adjustable scraper 11 and a screw conveyer 16. The filter cloth 3 is sprayed by means of pipes 10 which are connected to the pipe 9. In a modification, the filter comprises several hollow discs covered with filter cloth and spaced apart on a horizontal shaft. Scraping devices are mounted one on each side of a disc.
