PURPOSE:To continuously form a metallic coat having a uniform thickness around a long-sized optical fiber by passing the fiber through a molten metallic coating material and by forcing the coated surface to be cooled immediately after coating. CONSTITUTION:In the vicinity of the nozzle 5 of a crucible 4 holding a molten metal 7 for coating melted by heating with a heating furnace 6, a circular pipe 32 for spouting a cooling medium is placed with a heat shielding plate 31 in-between, and a metal coated optical fiber 3' drawn out of the nozzle 5 is wound around a drum through the pipe 32. At this time, a cooling medium introduced into the pipe 32 as shown by an arrow 34 is uniformly spouted from a plurality of spouting holes 33 toward the periphery of the fiber 3' passing through the pipe 32 as shown by arrows 34' to continuously solidify the metallic coat by forced cooling. |
