An iron which is constructed to be self-righting has at least one switch, which switches depending on its orientation and is provided especially for controlling a time switch. The power supply for heating the iron can be switched off in a time-delayed manner using the time switch. It is preferably provided that the iron emits an audible and/or visible signal after being righted into its rest position when a first time period has elapsed and, if required, at the same time also reduces the heating power, and switches off heating of the iron after a second time period has elapsed.
