A firearm has a breech which is actuable by the firing operation for the cartridge change and which is made essentially in two parts with a breech slide and a breech piece. As a drive for the return movement of the breech slide, some of the gas pressure is transmitted from inside the barrel to a piston and from this to a release and take-up element for the breech slide. Between the breech slide and the grip piece or suchlike housing is a first lock and between the barrel and the breech piece a second lock which are released in succession during the return of the breech slide. The connection between the barrel and the breech piece is released only approximately in the rear stop position of the breech slide which during its return movement, also stores by means of tension springs the energy necessary for the subsequent return of the breech piece. After the shot has been fired, the breech slide and breech piece jointly return to their initial positions and are locked there.
